if existing software/services already have "unpublished" as a literal label in their UI, that is reason enough to document a specific page for it with those examples to start with

All new posts have that state by default. The UI has a "Publish" button and a "Save and Keep Unpublished" button. Once it's published, though, there isn't a "verb" button to unpublish it; instead under the post settings you can check the "Unpublished" box.

In ProcessWire it has an "unpublished" state, which is basically a draft. The post has a URL but it's not public on the site and would 404 if anyone other than a signed in admin accessed it.

In print "unpublished works" are usually content that was not yet published

I typically think of unpublished as referring to drafts. While the work could make sense for removing content, I don't tend to use or interpret it that way.

Maybe unpublished is redundant, but maybe the nuance is helpful.

[tantek] I used "unpublished draft" to emphasise that despite having a URL, the post is not yet published as a full post on my site.

I wonder if there is an alternative/better term for the first meaning of "unpublished"

another meaning of "unpublished"' is in reference to an action taken "unpublish" after the fact, i.e. site X unpublished posts by author Y.

one meaning of "unpublished" is "has yet to be published", a kind (state?) of a draft, perhaps private or perhaps shared with folks using an unlisted URL
