but there are downsides, eg they can make it hard to expand your org or product into new areas, and they can lack the energy and emotion that come with creative names more often

[manton.org] The Verge has a long article by David Pierce today about ActivityPub. The quote from me about domain names doesn’t come across quite how I intended it… Yes, domain names are hard, but we need to make them much easier to deal with because they’re actually great. lahacker: names even for imaginary people are hard. I seem to recall a conversation I had with [tantek] about that and wondering if we should just ask if people in the community mind lending their names for examples. Both to make examples more personal and because we may be able to pick some non-default non-anglo names.

Orcid is a is a nonproprietary alphanumeric code to uniquely identify scientific and other academic authors and contributors. This addresses the problem that a particular author's contributions to the scientific literature or publications in the humanities can be hard to recognize as most personal names are not unique, they can change (such as with marriage), have cultural differences in name order, contain inconsistent use of first-name abbreviation
