  • Hive web search: I need to switch a small static website from a shared hosting account. I was thinking of changing to Amazon Web Services, but I just looked at Netlify, and it looks pretty easy to set up and connect to GitHub. Any recommendations here? (Also meta: does this question belong here or #dev?)

  • It's like twitter in 2007 or Mastodon in 2017 - the feeling of being in the early days of a better social web, where the trolls haven't taken over, it hasn't been enshittified and there is still some kind of shared culture. This is partly an illusion of it still being small and invite only, partly the hope of keeping that culture, earnestly expressed by the queer, trans, black and activist folk who make up a big chunk of the userbase

  • I think YaCy is designed to query all of its peers in the federation in real time as it is implausible to replicate a whole WAN-crawler - it's more about physics than being naive. The reason it failed to gain traction was more about how it handled ranking and compositing results. It could probably be easily adjusted for this Small Web use case to always replicate the index and only query locally.

  • [social.horrorhub.club/@thudfactor] I have a small connection to Jerry Springer (RIP): way back in 1996 I ran a web site for a friend called "slac.com". Another member -- named Jerry -- registered his first name as a domain name and parked it at slac, and then I suddenly started getting angry emails complaining... • However, as many forgot to link to their site from the wiki or update their link, this would still give us skewed statistics of yet something else. The most interesting measure would be if some small, independent web crawlers were augmented to keep statistics about recently updated sites over the world per IndieMark feature support.
