i do this by having the real folder at /path/to/hugo/site/data/webmention_io and morris has a symlink folder named "data" that points to that path.

yup - saved in a data folder, and hugo is aware of the datalocation in config.toml

hmm. one thing to check is to make sure you're saving data directly into the hugo data folder. hugo doesn't follow symlinks.

Regarding WordPress, it's not my first choice, I certainly feel it's way too heavy for just microblogging. However, I have not been able to get Known, Hugo, and Grav working to my satisfaction. OTOH, WordPress is very easy to customize, so I have continued to stick with it.

Personally I'm limited to WordPress, and learning a little bit of Hugo. With the IndieWeb I'm trying to learn all the content management systems, but nothing comes close to WordPress for non-coders like me.

I'm building 2 sites with Hugo. After that a WP child theme where I'll bake in as much of the IndieWeb as possible. Hence put the WP on a back-burner.

my micropub endpoint is coming along; my Hugo themes have been updated accordingly... need to get syndication to Twitter going; and then maybe tackle webmentions.
