The map element is hidebound to a predetermined pixel width. It doesn't accommodate alternate units to start with. Add to that you can display an image in a container and have parts of it hidden in an overflow none context, you can have height and width attributes set but also override them, including dynamically, with CSS, and you can explicitly set object-fit now, hiding parts of the image. Srcset looks promising because the social sharing ratios are typically wide (like 1.91:1 in FB’s case) and that coincidentally has the same cropping and scaling issues as large images on laptops, so you could make those wide images the default and then have backup alternate images that are square or tall to uncrop them for mobile, tablet, etc.

I read something about this lately but I can't remember where. The TL;DR is that there is only one web. We should try to make the one we have better without risk of exclusion on merits like participation in an alternate currency system.

sounds similar to https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/348 . BF would have to detect that a web site is also an AP actor, either by fetching it with conneg, or by looking for a rel=alternate link with the AP content type

Oh Shift+Enter is impossible here. Anyway Mastodon does support `.json` kind of request, it's just that the rel=alternate doesn't use it
