services like /micro.blog let you start with a subdomain, can optionally set up a domain on it. Definitely and indieweb friendly option.

even fully managed services like http://micro.blog can be fully indieweb in both spirit and practice

[indieweb.social/@janboddez] Why do I “suspect” https://micro.blog? Because (1) all of the originating IPs point back to Linode. And (2) the user-agent string mentions Ruby.... (https://indieweb.social/@janboddez/111886381891774098)

One of the top results when I searched on http://marginalia.nu was to a 2019 thread where apparently I had "liked" a bunch of tweets and it looked real bad in http://micro.blog (like broken spam). Pretty sure I stopped putting likes in my feed to http://micro.blog so that shouldn't be a problem but I should have seen it at the time

bit of a false dichotomy, obviously there's a big spectrum in between, eg masto.host is basically what they want, just like http://micro.blog is for IndieWeb. self-hosting admin tax is real, and a good reason friendly purpose-built hosts are valuable
