Did anyone ever introduce Dave Winer to the ideas of microsub and the separation of feeds and readers? I am not sure if he is still open to new ideas or just following his own path... http://scripting.com/2019/06/04.html#a151733

[manton.org] Interesting take by Dave Winer (in audio, here’s the download link) about the sort of post-Twitter technical mess we might be in, specifically around ActivityPub and the complications of federation. I do worry about new standards being so difficult compared to the old social... (https://www.manton.org/2024/01/22/interesting-take-by.html)

tantek: thank you for your thoughts about the tone/content of that wiki article ... it's a difficult line to walk because i totally 100% agree that it's useful to say (and justify) "we've had bad experiences with this tool and don't recommend it anymore". but the guy is (was?) working on self-hosting stuff, and it felt to me a little bit like bret said to dave winer — "same team".

shaners - ironic about the winer post you reference, he says "choose to invest in user freedom" - but he isn't really. he's explicitly investing (or asking others to invest) in "RSS" and making RSS competitive - but RSS is already so much legacy XML that is has nothing to do with "user freedom" any more.

Does IndieWeb (or anyone in it) have a history with Dave Winer? I suspect he could be a helpful force. In this Twitter thread he indicates he thinks one of the [world's] problems is "lack of organization and education" which is something I think that IndieWeb is actually trying to do. https://twitter.com/davewiner/status/817408935221227520

Many moons ago I played around with some code from Dave Winer and his feedreader. I wonder if I can bootstrap some stuff to read out OPML files and put it in Aperture. That would make export/import pretty easy and transfer to microsub less a hassle....

I'm really not a big fan of Dave Winer but in this specific case, he seems to be correct about the fragility of HTTPS, though it's a reverse direction: not because of forgot-to-renew certificates, but because of how root certificates are agreed upon.

[manton.org] Dave Winer posted a 12-minute audio recording on his blog, addressed to me but applicable to everyone who is creating tools for the social web. Listening to it, I have a bunch of thoughts. In this post, I just want to start with server-to-server ActivityPub, and leave some of the... (https://www.manton.org/2023/07/25/next-step-for.html)

[manton.org] Today we’re introducing a new feature: blog recommendations. This was inspired by recent interest in bringing back blogrolls, including posts from Dave Winer, his service FeedLand, the recommendations feature in Ghost, and feedback from Micro.blog users asking for new ways to... Winer on JSON: http://scripting.com/2006/12/20.html " I figured, sheez it can't be that hard to parse, so let's see what it looks like, and damn, IT'S NOT EVEN XML!… No doubt I can write a routine to parse this, but look at how deep they went to re-invent, XML itself wasn't good enough for them, for some reason (I'd love to hear the reason). Who did this travesty? Let's find a tree and string them up. Now."
