adactio, my optimistic guess at what may be happening is that the author of that post got the microdata wrong (because it *is* harder), their data was thus not all picked up, and thus the snippets didn't work as expected.

hober - the key here is that it doesn't matter what Hixie or anyone else says in terms of a theoretical/architectural "are designed to be" - if we find a specific use case for something, and make it work (publish, implement), the spec will follow.

it has to be defined, but that's the point, because rel values have to be defined anyway, combinations are open to definition, which is what we're doing with "home alternate" because it's useful (has a practical machine-readable use case)
