It's all very prototypey/experimental, and my goal isn't actually post-kinds-for-Gutenberg (that's just a side-effect) because I've got OTHER Gutenberg-unfriendly plugins too! My goal, though, is to outsource microformats-stuff to my theme and just use post-kinds for the backend interface.

Tried simple_local_avatars. Doesn't work for me. at least not with Sempress but I don't think it's the theme. It just hooks in with `pre_get_avatar_data` for the microformats but the image src returned from WordPress for the author profile is still gravatar again *sigh*. It's gone when I deselect "show avatar" in the H-Card Widget (removes photo from microformats as well). Kinda at a loss where this is coming

It is usually old microformats in the theme that cause the conflict.

there's no automated way that a plugin, or really even WordPress core, to include microformats, so it's up to the theme developers to handle themselves

Someone was asking earlier why Microformats 2 has to be supported in each individual theme. We use the Divi theme on a org site and want to include some IndieWeb functionality.

We don’t, but GWG has added microformats to a few things including the recommended base theme which are all available on his GitHub profile
