the test suite going offline is certainly a problem. but also the "magic set of extensions" you mentioned smacks of Mastodon-flavored ActivityPub and the way AP-based projects have to work with it.

to some extent the bizdev pairwise interop deals mirrored the need to do pairwise interop implementation, because the XMPP test was absolute crap

I think a lot of the "fear of -x- or X-" is based in old data / experiences, before we got much more efficient at iterating standards and making/using test suites

Update 19 Aug 2022: We ended the second test early, at 17:30 UTC today due to several complaints that this change was impacting production services. We plan to conduct another test in two weeks, for 48 hours starting at 17:00 UTC on Sep 1, ending at 17:00 UTC Sep 3. If you have dependencies on our web site in your production services please work to remove them, or update them to handle redirections and https.

the point of having a standard protocol is that implementations can implement it, pass a test suite, without ever having to talk with any other implementers, and things *just work* between implementations. no need to collaborate, or engage in MxN conversations with every other implementer
