I was on the schema mailing list for a while. I liked it at first, but fairly quickly realized it was an attempt to categorize everything that was doomed to failure. A regular post on the list would be "I have such-and-such, there's no schema for that, let's make one." The result being, I dunno, thousands (tens of thousands? surely not!) schemas with absurd specificity.

glitzeor4444[d]: Oh, doh…ha…yeah I’m an artist that works in the animation and illustration industry. Times have been very difficult for artists so I pivoted to writing satire and illustrating my own articles. So basically I made a living portfolio called “Thigville” ( https://www.thigville.com ).

I’m trying to distance myself away from social media a bit and focus more on longer form writing and better info to consume (a friend of mine recommended the Indie web)

I think a newer concern, aside from schema or not, is the decrease in people clicking through to actual websites when they're shown the LLM overview in search. I've turned that overview off on Google myself, following https://tenbluelinks.org/

I'm thinking of maybe product data for a shop, or maybe a news article. I don't know what the latest is for news articles, maybe they're still doing AMP?

Yeah, schema.org may be important if you want things to show up a certain way in a big search engine, but not strictly required. They still crawl and index "just" HTML, so the old ways probably work fine for most :)
