[tantek] yes, I had a similar thought about IPFS in the moment. There's a case to be made for greater probability of long-term availability with distributed storage—bittorrent sorings to mind too—but of course it's really not much more of a guarantee.

that said, checksums and catalogs of pointers *do* have archival value. in the sense that Blockchain applications store those there's value there. I will point out their similarity to https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Reference/Attributes/integrity which we also mentioned in terms of "trusting" that a link is what it says it is.

[artlung] That's a valid and interesting observation. It can go either way, but yes, as I think about it, back when I was much more active in Web3, the biggest use of data on blockchain was pointers to other things, not actual archival data. There were instances—and from the code side, smart contracts are software that may become functionally obsolete but never disappears—but, no, the majority of use cases, you're right.

[Mike]++ I think we’d have handled it with aplomb, after all often what's stored is not the digital assets themselves, but a link! So in that sense blockchain doesn't attempt to solve the longevity problem at all!
