Also, just to lay my Pixelfed cards on the table, I don’t have any experience using the app to consume photos. I saw some kind of IG wannabe public feed of trending stuff as the default view and ran the other way instantly. I’m basically using it as a headless CMS and only use the app to create photos for me to use elsewhere.

I’m just thinking of seniors as a target audience. Not to be overly biased by a sample size of just my mom but I only recently found out that she didn’t know how to click on links that I’d text her.

that's why i was trying to get at the difference between sharing select photos with select people vs passively broadcasting to a chosen audience

Flickr might be a better use of time than going down a custom route for this quest, but things are always evolving. If I go down a route with Jellyfin for music streaming I'll see if it can do photos too

sharing photos with a limited audience is very much a UX challenge

I really do understand the desire to keep developer chat out to the other channel but basically I have questions about the user experience of the path I want to learn. Like I don't know anything about Jellyfin or Pixelfed in practical terms yet, I just have decided that this experience of sharing photos with my relatives is worth investing some kind of time into understanding. It's the main thing keeping me on a silo right now

through. If she can save the website to a home screen icon this seems like an acceptable level of complexity or novelty to impose on my elders

The end user experience I am looking for is basically a barely protected maybe with a password but not crawled gallery of photos, with a stretch goal of allowing comments. As a input user experience I want to shuffle the files into a folder and have it automatically synced with the instance of whatever it is I'm running. Basically I take a photo and put it in the folder on my device, she can view it at a hyperlink with something easy to click

chances are, whatever you do, you'll need her to download and use a new/different app. if that's ok, then yeah she can use a fediverse client to look at a Pixelfed account, but she could also use a feed/social reader to look at a (possibly protected or unlisted) feed on your site, or other options
