Though most of the things I just said only really apply if we move step 7.4 up. I think it is fine as a fallback for when 7.1–7.3 fail.

Please note that I also tried installing a brand new WP instance on the same server and enabled the webmentions plugin and semantic linkbacks plugin. Activating semantic linkbacks didn't fail but receiving webmentions did fail.

aaronpk did you decide on anything for URL length? I see you were thinking about it too https://indiechat.search.cweiske.de/?q=url+length but for some reason the links to the actual chatlogs fail for me :(
