if you don't want to offer a "good" codec and a fallback codec, then VP8 is your best bet

Thanks, pcarrier. I probably will go with a well supported codec. I don't want to exclude older apple devices and I don't want to worry about licensing questions

you can compress _much_ faster through your GPU if you have one (keywords: NVENC for nvidia, VAAPI for Intel and AMD; Vulkan Video is sadly not quite consistent yet, even if it works results are often subpar

I'd lean toward AV1 with VP8 as a fallback if you care about licensing (I think you should, otherwise h264 is an even better fallback). refer to https://caniuse.com/?search=vp8 when making choices like this
