re: shouldn’t need to be able to post in order to be able to follow <- we have that now with /social_readers, E.g. I'm able to use Aperture etc with my domain to follow folks without any ability to "post" using Micropub etc. The protocols have already been designed to allow for "the old model of feed reader being separate from posting space"

at this point there are tons (and more being made all the time) of Micropub clients, there are few if any AP C2S clients, and there are Mastodon-proprietary-API clients. So it makes the most sense to go for Micropub as the common interop protocol there
