  • Thanks for the advice, everyone. I think what I have works, modulo some bugs. I'll have to write a bunch of test cases (yaye, more tests!), and then write the rest of the newsfeed processor (I only have the document processing in place, not fetching, scraping, sanitizing, etc, etc), but having a good universal newsfeed processor for PHP has been a dream of mine going on eight years, and this week I'm one step closer!

  • The mf2 parsing algorithm is pretty complex, yeah, not to mention ambiguous in some spots. I was able to write a generic parser in a week, though I then spend months off and on supplementing the test suite, because much of what is specified was not actually tested.

  • Years back when I was advising Microsoft web app product teams, they would build to work with standards and test first in Safari. If it worked there it would work in nearly everything else. That still holds up. Chromium and Firefox are farther ahead than Safari (for the most part, some things Safari is ahead, like spatial web handling).
