[snarfed]: my problem was not with brid.gy; it was webmention.io. Because the source only contains https://href.li/TARGETURL the parser on webmention.io says the TARGETURL is not found on the source page, and, unfortunately, it's correct.

there doesn't seem to be a way to turn this behaviour off - href.li in front of _any_ URL on tumblr - meaning I don't seem to be able to make an actual link to the canonical post

you gotta be kiddin' me... it seems like tumblr hard rewrites (as in in HTML source) in-description HTML URLs to https://href.li/?[original url]

Dirty rats.... Looks like Tumblr is running all the links on their site through href.li to hide the referrers which means that it is much harder for one's site on it to send webmentions.
