tantek yup. i get these procedures may be more tiresome, repetitive, if you're coding for a living (which i don't), but even then you're probably debugging all the time.

I’m curious, how many of the people in this feed war had personal sites vs advocating for hypothetical commercial gain? Having your own sandbox probably seems like such a small thing when swept up in it all but very grounding in hindsight.

The only similarity is that for a while, a few folks at W3C did copy and soft fork HTML5 from WHATWG, including trying to force RDFa into HTML5. That's the only "similar" thing that happened. A few W3C folks insisting on forcing RDF to be in a spec that has no need for it

Didn’t a similar story happen with html5? Developed outside of W3C, brought back later.

When they were talking to "official" standards groups, W3C folks wanted to slam a bunch of RDF into Atom which none of the folks who worked on Atom wanted. So they took it to IETF and we got RFC 4287

trwnh, another part of the story. Do you know why Atom was standardized at IETF instead of W3C? Atom was prototyped in large part by an independent group before "official" standardization (on a wiki no less)

trwnh, I've written (no link offhand) about how/why I (as a publisher) only have an Atom feed for similar reasons btw. Have never made an RSS feed myself because by the time I was looking into it, Atom 0.3 was already easier to "get right" as a publisher than RSS2. Didn't bother to touch anything with RDF which I already knew was a waste of time way back then

The "majority" I’m talking about is the set of people that went off to create RSS 1.0 which was a dead-end. Harder for developers with no discernible user (or developer!) benefits

Of course Atom is easier, it's derivative work (that took years!) of cleaning up and adding a few features to RSS 2.0

not sure what the "majority" is in this case but i do recall reading an article about how rss is a nightmare to actually work with, whereas atom is easier to get correct: https://nullprogram.com/blog/2013/09/23/
