with a bit of tweaking using CSS transforms, I think you could get a very similar effect; you might not be able to get the same level of animation control, but some of it should be possible as well

actually, for once, I think this would be totally doable with CSS. The bit that would require JS is the duplication of the element, but I'm not sure that's needed if you use combinations of the CSS shadows
