It's the difference between pull and push: Twitter Cards are reliable but rely on you pulling the data into Twitter whereas automatic POSSE solutions are pushing the data usually based on microformats markup which is harder to get right as it requires editing your theme etc.

the problem with the microformats plugin is always, that we can not guarantee that it will work, because it heavily depends on the theme… that’s also a reason why we cannot auto activate the plugin…

davidmead, the Microformats 2 plugin does the best it can to add markup without theme cooperation.

You could do that without the theme ever knowing or caring about microformats, I think, though there might be other drawbacks.

Ah, so here was how I actually had assumed it worked: suppose you want to post an event. Some plugin/theme code throws up a metabox in your post editor with various microformats to select from, one is the event format. When you save your post the markup for that microformat is written along with it.

It doesn't call any functionality if the theme declares microformats 2 support

apatters I suspect you're using the uf2 plugin or your theme errantly adds u-photo to your (gr)avatar. When you syndicate via Bridgy Publish it pulls in the u-photo https://brid.gy/about#microformats

WordPress Core only implements a couple mf1 tags and then leaves everything else up to the theme. But there are no settings, so switching to mf2 isn't exactly a simple thing.

Hi all, thank you very much for your help yesterday on POSSE from my self hosted wp site via bridgy - the problem was indeed my theme not adhering to microformats properly as you told me. I changed to the Sempress theme and now it works a charm. I also tested "independent pubisher" theme which I saw on here https://indieweb.org/WordPress/Themes but it did not work out of the box for me.
