I use github for my WP plugins but usually edit them in the WP plugin editor. I just push them to github from there (have a plugin that gives me a "push to github" button in the WordPress admin panel.) All I really care about is the version history so I can roll back, don't really mess with branching. If I was developing in something a little more git-compatible than WordPress's admin area I might.
