jamietanna: thanks for reminding me of Caddy, I must have a proper play with it sometime. It looks great – not that I've ever had any complaints about nginx.

capjamesg[d]: why not a wildcard cert? I use subdomains (and also more than one root domain but that's another story) and never had an issue with managing certs with LetsEncrypt. I do use reverse proxying to local sockets/ports (with Nginx) but from the subdomains.

there are solutions for authorization/authentication that work as transparent proxy in front of your content, the simplest being basic http authentication (eg https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_auth_basic.html or https://docs.nginx.com/nginx/admin-guide/security-controls/configuring-http-basic-authentication/).

my plan was to replace nginx with a custom web server (probably Rust using axum) which would work for receiving webmentions (i would implement them myself), it's mostly sending that i don't have an idea for yet, so if anyone has any suggestions, id' love to hear them :)

my current deploy process builds a new docker image consisting of nginx & my static site & deploys that in my docker swarm, but i don't really have an idea as to how i could make it so that my webmention implemention could detect when I've created/changed a post to actually send the webmentions
