As to RSS _"will alter the breadth and composition of the “public” that you reach"_ I would say that WordPress blogs and Blogspot and Tumblr blogs come with feeds by default (unless private) and there are plenty of zero traffic, lonely people on those platforms.

I don't believe WordPress core sets a cookie unless you're signing in to the admin, or you are a public visitor leaving a comment: https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/wordpress/cookies/

[tantek]: Thanks. I do keep an eye on that channel. It's not very active, but I'm hoping to be able to take everything I'm learning in this process and make it easier on the next person. I'm just really glad I didn't have to learn how to use wordpress at the same time. lol

cupparex, you may also be interested in (or perhaps you already know about!) the #indieweb-wordpress channel which has a whole bunch of very helpful and sympathetic folks who are successfully using WordPress on their personal site
