I have had a blog since 2015, jacobatice.com. It used to be a self-hosted WordPress site but when my dad who pays for hosting switched to using WordPress.com for his site I converted it to a static site on GitLab Pages. Currently it's hosted on and generated by Netlify from a repo on GitLab.

The one hoop for WordPress users (speaking as one lol) is that a lot of us are so used to grabbing a plugin and boom it's done. I'd never messed around in the theme files or cpanel as much as I did, but it taught me so much, and I'm way more comfortable now. And I can't tell you how much I've learned so far. Which is amazing.

We definitely need more WordPress specific "how to", perhaps even shorter simple "how to" pages dedicated to each feature like you said, IndieAuth, Webmentions

I can see how that can happen very easily. When I follow a tutorial I have no problem digging for info and replacements. I think that's part of owning your own site, gotta be willing to dig for things you need. I just don't think beginners are always willing to do it. I've worked with Wordpress for a long time, but jumping into webmentions and IndieAuth were new territory. Part of my problem is there was so much information I

We used to have a bunch of Wordpress setup tutorials but no one maintained them so they became out of date and useless to new folks :(
