↩️ I agree the bar to entry is too high. The hosted service is pricey, and self-hosting requires Extreme Nerd Shit like this ridiculous thing I made http://github.com/joshdick/microstat/ but I can't help but love the idea behind IndieWeb/a Twitter-ish experience built on open web standards.

↩️ I'm inclined to agree. I'm investigating Mastodon as an alternative, but I'm not very hopeful. I'm really keen on the idea of the IndieWeb, and that supports short posts called notes that are similar to tweets, but I can't find an implementation I like

Very very much agree with Sara. I use @feedbin + @reederapp for my RSS consumption. One can even start making it a bit more social and real-time by adding some @indiewebcamp stuff to.
